Everything You Need to Know About ETIAS—Europe’s New Documentation Requirement
April 21, 2026

Europe has historically been one of the most popular and easiest regions for Americans to travel to. While this remains true, starting at the end of 2026, new documentation requirements will go into effect for travelers who have previously needed nothing more than a passport to enter most European countries. The European Travel Information & Authorisation System (ETIAS) is the new travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers from over 50 countries and territories to enter 30 European countries. Travelers from the United States are included in this group. There is no reason to stress though—the process is very simple and can be completed online. Let’s break it down.

General Information About ETIAS:

  • The ETIAS program is set to begin in Q4 of 2026. The European Union will announce the specific start date several months prior to the official launch.
  • An ETIAS authorization will be required for visa-exempt nationals traveling to 30 European countries, including popular destinations like Germany, Greece, Italy, and Spain.
  • The authorization will be linked to travelers passports and will be valid for 3 years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first (if you get a new passport for any reason you must get a new ETIAS authorization).
  • ETIAS are necessary for all short-term stays of up to 90 days within a 180 period. Travelers must have a valid authorization for the entire length of their trip.

How to Apply for ETIAS Authorization:

Luckily, the ETIAS application process is extremely simple and can be completed on the official website or mobile app. Here’s a look at what steps need to be taken and the general timeline:

  • Fill out the application. You will need to provide the following information:
    • A valid travel document to which a visa may be affixed—should not expire in less than 3 months or be more than 10 years old
    • Personal information including name, parents’ names, DOB, address, email, etc.
    • Current level of education and occupation
    • Details about your travel and length of stay in countries requiring ETIAS
    • Information about any criminal convictions, past travels to war/conflict zones, and whether you have recently been subject to a decision requiring you to leave any country
  • Pay the fee of 20 Euros (some travelers including youth, seniors, and family members of EU nationals may be exempt from payment)
  • Most applications will be processed within a few minutes
  • If more information is needed or an interview is requested, processing can take up to 30 days—it is recommended to apply at least a month in advance of travel

Important ETIAS Details to Keep in Mind:

Being a prepared traveler means being a successful traveler! Before ETIAS take effect, keep the following details in mind:

  • Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after your departure to return home from countries that require ETIAS (it is a good practice to do this when traveling anywhere)
  • Once you receive your ETIAS authorization, double check that all details match your travel documents exactly—if they do not, you can (and probably will) be denied entry
  • Apply early to ensure your travel plans don’t get delayed due to processing time
  • Check out the FAQS page on the official ETIAS website as questions arise
