With the new year around the corner, many of us are beginning to consider what our new year’s resolutions might be. At this time two years ago I made the resolution to finally take the leap and venture out on my first solo trip. Little did I know, stepping into the world of solo travel would forever change the way I explore the world.
My first solo trip was also my first trip to Europe - and I wouldn’t change anything about it! In the summer of 2024 I traveled to Italy and Croatia before meeting up with my friend in Greece. This was the perfect first solo adventure for me, as I was able to really embrace it with 2 weeks alone while still looking forward to ending my trip with company. Then, in the spring of 2025, I fully embraced the solo lifestyle, traveling to Costa Rica and exploring the beautiful cities of La Fortuna and Puerto Viejo. Now, looking forward to 2026, I am ready to take on my biggest adventure yet - a solo backpacking trip through Southeast Asia.
These days, solo travel seems to be booming, likely because of social media and the increase in people staying single for longer while embracing their independence. While this may be true, I still get so many people asking me how I do it. Do I get nervous in new countries? Is it difficult to meet people while traveling? Do I feel like I’m missing out on fun because I don’t have someone with me to share experiences with? And, honestly, the answer to all these questions is sometimes “yes” and sometimes “no.” But, to me, there is a much bigger picture when it comes to traveling solo.
I believe that solo travel is one of the most powerful tools for building confidence. I have never felt more capable than when I have successfully problem-solved in a foreign country where I don’t speak the language. Or when I make memories with a new friend who lives halfway around the world. Or when I fully enjoy my own company while indulging in local cuisine alone at a crowded restaurant. Knowing that you, and you alone, can provide for and create a fun and exciting environment for yourself is one of the most empowering feelings.
I also believe that solo travel is the best way to explore the world on your terms. You create your own itinerary based on your own interests. You decide whether you’re in the mood for a relaxing day on the beach or a heart-pumping hike through the mountains. You decide when you’re hungry and where and what you’d like to eat. One day when I was in Milan, I simply sat on a bench in a bustling park for hours drinking Aperol spritzes and taking pictures because the energy was amazing and I felt so at peace. I never felt rushed or responsible for anyone else. I truly just enjoyed the moment and let it last.
Now, on the flip side, I don’t believe that travel is always meant to be fun or comfortable. I think when most of us think of travel we think of vacation - time away from the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives. While this can be true, not all types of travel are created equal. When you travel alone you are on the hook for everything. Forgot to pack something? Lost a confirmation email? Delayed flight and need to change your hotel check in time? All of these things fall on you. While these things can be uncomfortable, I think they are necessary. Dealing with bumps in the road on a trip prepares you for them when you’re back at home too. And problem solving in the fast-paced world of travel builds more transferable skills than you can even imagine. Things I have learned abroad have made me more aware for my personal safety (i.e. how to carry my valuables while in big cities), helped me practice real life social skills (I go out alone to restaurants and bars regularly when I am at home now and absolutely love it), and I use travel tools in my everyday life to make countless tasks easier (like using Google Translate at restaurants, finding walking directions to new places in my neighborhood, and finding local activities on GetYourGuide).
I have met people from around the globe (who I still stay in touch with!) and have become a better version of myself by embracing solo travel and making it a central part of my life. I truly believe that anyone, at any age, should take at least one trip on their own. Finally visit that destination you’ve dreamed of, on your own time and in your own way! Easing in is always a great way to get started too. Earlier this year I published a blog post on cruising solo with Virgin Voyages. A trip like this would make it easy to plan activities and meet fellow travelers…maybe even leading to future adventures with new friends!
Braving the world alone can feel scary, but it doesn’t have to be! I was that person a few years ago, afraid to take the leap. Now, I’m so thankful for believing in myself, trying something new, and falling in love with venturing out on my own path. Solo travel is truly how I fuel my soul.
