Things I missed, but would love to go back to do in Iceland

On our very first day traveling the Ring Road in Iceland, I stood on the black sand beach in Vík and watched as dozens of beautiful Icelandic horses came trotting by with smiling tourists enjoying the view from their saddles. I promised myself that next time I visited the island I would ride one of those horses along this beach.

There is so much to do in Iceland that it’s impossible to squeeze everything into one trip! But, that doesn’t mean you can’t plan a trip that’s right for you. Here are a few things I didn’t get to do in Iceland, but will be adding to my list next time I visit:

1. Ride along the black sand beach with Vík Horse Adventure

Iceland is famous for their horses, with the Landsmót, an annual event showcasing horses and riders, being the largest outdoor sporting event on the island. Take the opportunity to ride one of these famous horses and view the black sand beach along the quaint town of Vík by booking a tour with Vík Horse Adventure.

2. Tour an ice cave with Troll Expeditions

If you’re able to stay in Vík a bit longer, join Troll Expeditions on an ice cave tour! Not only will you see the Katla Volcano’s caves of ash and ice, you will get there by taking an exciting 4x4 Jeep ride into the highlands.

3. Cruise through icebergs with Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon Boat Tours

The views from the shore at Glacier Lagoon are breathtaking - there are countless icebergs and seals swimming between them that could entertain anyone for hours. Get closer to the action by joining one of the many excursions offered by Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon Boat Tours.

4. Hike a glacier with Local Guide of Vatnajökull

Vatnajökull is the largest glacier in Iceland and covers about 8% of the country. Local Guide of Vatnajökull is a small, family-run company that has been hosting glacier tours for over three decades. You can choose your adventure with the company and do everything from viewing the glacier on a Jeep ride to climbing down into ice caves.

5. Spend the day exploring Akureyri, the “Capital of the North”

Akureyri is the largest city in Northern Iceland and boasts amazing restaurants, shops, and views of the Eyjafjörður Fjord. This is a great stop to break up your Ring Road tour - after days of enjoying the natural wonders of Iceland, unwind with a bit of urban wonder.
